The government will analyse as to why Bangladesh ambassador to Moscow, Kamrul Ahsan, was summoned, said state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam.
The state minister made the remark while answering queries from newsmen at the foreign ministry on Wednesday.
Bangladeshi ambassador to Moscow Kamrul Ahsan was summoned to the Russian foreign ministry on Tuesday as part of a protest against the government’s decision not to allow Russian ships under the US sanction to dock at Bangladesh ports.
When asked about the matter, Shahriar Alam said, “We have asked for detailed reports from our ambassador. We will analyse what discussion took place there. Here not only (summon), more bilateral issues have been discussed there.”
The state minister said that a complex situation has been created over the Ukraine-Russia war.
The Russian foreign ministry told the Bangladesh ambassador that Bangladesh’s step runs counter to the traditionally friendly character of bilateral relations and can have a negative effect on the prospects for the bilateral cooperation in various spheres according to a statement of Russian foreign ministry.
Last week, Russia’s embassy in Dhaka confirmed to TASS that 69 Russian ships had been barred from calling at the country’s ports.
After Russia carried out attack on Ukraine on 24 February 2022, many ships of Russia came under sanctions by the US and its allies.
Meanwhile, the Russian move to summon the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Moscow over Dhaka’s recent decision to block Russian ships with western sanctions from entering in the Bangladesh territory to unload the equipment for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has drawn much attention in the diplomatic landscape.
Though Bangladesh and Russia have had historical relations since the birth of Bangladesh in 1971, the issue of summoning the Bangladeshi Envoy to Moscow on Tuesday was an unprecedented incident, highlighting tensions between the two countries and the fear of the continuation of the Power Plant.
As Bangladesh has become strategically important, the major powers are focusing their attention to gain supremacy in this region and Bangladesh is now in the vortex of geopolitics, experts said.
They said that Bangladesh needs to be more focused and make its position clear, saying that the country does not want to be a part of any conflict.
“The major challenge of Bangladesh is now how it will protect itself from the vortex of geopolitics. Whether we want it or not, we are in it. We will have to focus on our priorities,” former Ambassador Humayun Rashid said.
Mentioning the rising tension between the US and China as well as the Russia-Ukraine war, he said, “Not only Bangladesh but also other countries are experiencing the repercussions of such incidents. Bangladesh should take steps by observing all these issues.”
