At least 50 people were injured after Bangladesh Chhatra League men allegedly attacked activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad at Dhaka University campus on Friday morning.
The incident took place at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the university when the leaders and activists of COP gathered at TSC premises on this morning marking its fifth founding anniversary.
According to eyewitness, the Chhatra Odhiker Paroshad men gathered at TSC to celebrate its fifth founding anniversary. But a group of BCL men who took position in the area from earlier attacked on the leaders and activists of the COP and beat mercilessly.
Later the COP men brought out a procession protesting the attack on the DU campus on this evening.
A number of 26 people including Central President Bin Yamin Mollah, General Secretary Ariful Islam Adib, Vice-President Akhter Hosssain and Organizing Secretary Molla Rahmatullah, injured at the attack, according to the statement signed by Nusrat Tabassum, Coordinator of the office cell of DU unit COP.
Several leaders of the student body’s said that the injured leaders took treatment from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), BSMMU and Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital.
“We gathered at TSC to celebrate fifth anniversary but BCL men took position earlier. At the one stage BCL men led by BCL leaders Munaf Pranto of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Abdul Haque Rabbi and Forid Zaman of Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall, Organising Secretary of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall unit Tanveer Alam Chowdhury,
and Organising Secretary of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall unit MR Jihad attacked us and beat mercilessly,” the COP added at the statement.
DU unit General Secretary of BCL Tanbir Hasan Shaikat however claimed that general students were celebrating the victory of Cumilla Victorians in the BPL when Chhatra Odhikar Parishad men told them to stop the celebration as it’s forbidden in Islam.
“They, at one stage, attacked the general students,” he claimed.
