Mustard farming target exceeds in Sirajganj region

Bangladesh is an import dependent country for edible oil. Most of the demand has to be imported from abroad. If we can bring the land lying between Aman and Bora under mustard cultivation then import dependency can be overcome to a great extent. The Department of Agricultural Extension is working with that goal in mind.
According to the Upazila Agriculture Office sources, last year 12700 hectares of mustard was cultivated in Shahzadpur Upazila. This year it has increased to 14050 hectares. This is possible due to the government’s agricultural incentive program and farmers getting good prices for mustard. This year in Shahjadpur upazila, 8230 farmers have been distributed free fertilizer and seeds of modern varieties of mustard. Also, exhibitions have been implemented with modern varieties of mustard from various projects.
One such project is “Increasing Production of Oil Crops”. Through this, the farmers have been encouraged to cultivate mustard in a modern way. Abdur Razzak, a farmer of Verakhola village in Gala Union, said that due to the good weather this year and the use of modern varieties, the yield of mustard has been so good that I have never seen such a good yield before. Year I will get bigha reflection 7 like mind. The current market price of mustard is Tk 3500 per maund. According to that my profit will be 14 to 15 thousand taka per bigha.
Agricultural extension officer agriculturist Md. Ehsanul Haque said, “We are constantly advising farmers to increase mustard cultivation and we have achieved this because of the good price of mustard.” Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Mohammad Abdus Chalam said, we have distributed free fertilizers and seeds among the farmers, installed sex pheromone traps to prevent the attack of cutworms. Farmers have also increased interest in mustard cultivation, which has resulted in more than the target yield.
