It is known that about 18 years ago, in Badaghat Bazar of Sadar Upazila some of the four acres of land of the Zilla Parishad was leased to different people for one year.
According to the one-year lease, if the lease is not renewed after one year, the leased premises shall come under the jurisdiction of the Zilla Parishad. But it didn’t happen anymore.
Those who took the lease did not renew it either. For the past one and a half years, the businessmen had been doing business there by building permanent shops.
Recently, the issue of this place came to the attention of the District Council. Meetings were held with local businessmen, public representatives and politicians to secure the site. Later, notices and specific time were given to remove the shops and goods. Many people removed their belongings after the notice. But many remained there.
Those concerned said that the evacuation operation started with bulldozers from 9 am on Sunday.
A large number of policemen are also participating in it. After the raid, many traders were seen moving their goods. About 70 illegal shops of half-baked and tin are being evicted in this operation.
Sylhet Zilla Parishad Chairman Panel Chairman Mustak Ahmad Palash said that a one-year lease was given here and there were no regulations for the construction of shops here. Still, the businessmen were doing business by building shops for a long time. He said, “According to the terms of the same lease, under no circumstances can permanent infrastructure be built on the leased land.” Violation of these terms automatically terminates the lease.
A single lease was granted here subject to these conditions. But by breaking the terms of the lease, permanent infrastructure is built here.
Palash said that the locals did not obstruct the operation.
They cooperated in the operation spontaneously, respecting the law. He said that the resettlement of the evicted traders will also be arranged. Meanwhile, locals want Zilla Parishad land for a mosque in Badaghat Bazar. Zilla Parishad authorities have decided to cooperate in this regard.
The panel chairman of the district council said, “The district council has the policy of the place.
According to the policy, land will be donated to the mosque in the market area, and financial support will also be provided. The name of this mosque will be Zilla Parishad Badaghat Bazar Mosque.
