US Embassy keen to raise coop with NHRC to defend human rights

The US Embassy in Dhaka is keen to enhance its cooperation with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to protect human rights and review the current human rights situation in Bangladesh.
The move came forward when US Ambassador to Dhaka Peter D. Haas on Wednesday met NHRC Chairman Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed in the latter’s office in the capital.
During the courtesy call, Dr Kamal apprised the Ambassador about the Commission’s activities and area of priorities.
“The newly formed Commission has taken strategic plans to work more effectively to protect human rights. The Commission will be more vocal whenever any violation of human rights is reported,” the NHRC Chairman said.
He also said that the Commission would take more initiatives to create awareness among people about human rights and promote building a culture of human rights in the society.
The US envoy also wanted to know about the upcoming parliamentary polls and the role of the Commission in the voting rights of the people.
The Chairman said that the Commission expected that the Election Commission would arrange a free and fair election so that the voters can exercise their franchise without fear.
During the meeting, the US envoy lauded the activities of the NHRC and expressed satisfaction about the Commission’s perspective plan and its implementation strategy to protect human rights.
Peter Haas also proposed to build up a cooperative relation among NHRC, US Embassy and US government to defend the human rights in the country. The meeting was also attended by Full-Time Member Md Selim Reza and Secretary Narayan Chandra Sarkar.
