LPG shortage in domestic market hits the kitchen

Staff Reporter :
The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders costs more than the government settled price due to the supply shortage in the domestic market.
In future the price will increase more if the situation remains same, experts said.
After a market assessment it was seen that the price of 12kg LPG cylinder ,was selling from Tk 1400 to Tk 1500 which is more than the price fixed by government to the retail consumer at Tk 1,232 on January 2, 2023.
The supply of LPG has significantly decreased across the country. Most LPG companies are supplying limited volume of products. At retail level, only five to six company’s LPG cylinders have been found.
The retail suppliers of LPG cylinder said the operators are supplying less cylinders. Even, after paying advance payments, they could not buy the LPG.
Business insiders said, the current over- price of LPG cylinder at retail level was mainly caused for LC opening crisis not for the global price hike.
In the last few months, prices at international level have been showing downward trends. But the current LC opening crisis in Bangladesh now cripples its imports, including LPG. Eventually, the stock of LPG is gradually shrinking and so does the supply, they added.
Regarding this supply shortage Anup Kumar Sen ,the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Orion Gas Limited told this correspondent ‘ We are currently facing supply-chain disruption due to the LC opening crisis. Our LPG business have been crippled significantly. If the situation remains same, we will face trouble to pay the bank loans.”
