SBMCH vandalised over death of patient

Relatives of the patient attacked and vandalized the doctor’s room of the medicine department of Sher -E -Bangla Medical College Hospital ( SBMCH) in Barishal on Sunday afternoon.
 After vandalizing the room of Medicine Unit-2 on Sunday afternoon, police detained a person who was released later on the request of the doctor, the police said. The deceased patient Shahidul Islam (50) was the son of deceased Ali Hossain of Kalsgram area of Kashipur Union of Sadar Upazila.
Shahidul’s brother-in-law Farooq Howladar said that his brother-in-law suffered a heart attack last night. He was admitted to Barishal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital around 9 am Sunday.
 After being brought there, she was admitted to Medicine Unit-2. After admission there, the sister-in-law’s chest pain. Seeing difficulties of breath, the doctors on duty ordered to give the patient oxygen quickly.
But his brother-in-law died due to delay in giving oxygen, condition of the patient deteriorated more. Meanwhile, the senior doctor visiting the patient, scolded the nurses on duty for death of the patient.
 Then son of the dead patient became angry at the death of his father and vandalized the doctor’s room. Later the police rushed to the spot, detained the unruly vandalizer.
SI Mainul of Barishal SBMCH Police Camp said that Jumman, the son of the deceased patient, broke the chair table, cup and dish in the doctor’s room. On getting the news, they went to the spot and detained Jumman. Later, due to the death of his father, he was released on the request of the doctors.
Medicine unit registrar Dr. Solaiman said, patients die every day in the medicine ward. Doctors try their best to save life of the patient. Still, the patient’s relatives often become furious. Therefore, this doctor said that it is important to install CCTV cameras along with the security of this ward.
Hospital director Dr. HM Saiful Islam said, we have more patients than doctors here. If there are three doctors, they have to give treatment to four hundred patients. So doctors cannot give enough time to serve the patient more intensively.
However it is not correct that the patient dies due to the negligence of the doctors, the doctors try their best. Efforts are being made to increase the safety of doctors. The public works department has been requested to install CC cameras in different indoor wards of the hospital as soon as possible, the SBCH director added.
