JSC, JDC exams scrapped

Staff Reporter :
The government has scrapped the Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations for the eighth graders after nearly 14 years of its introduction in 2009.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given consent to discontinue these examinations for eighth grade students, Akther Unnisa Shiuly, Deputy Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division said in an Office Order on Monday.
She further said that the Division sent the proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office in December last year.
“According to the National Curriculum Plan 2021, there is no provision for holding the JSC and JDC public/board examinations. Therefore, the scrapping of the JSC and the JDC examinations for the years 2022
and 2023 and the further academic years might be considered. The Prime Minister has approved the proposal,” the Office Order said.
The Order further said that the concerned stakeholders have been requested to take the next course of action in this regard.
The new curriculum, which is set to be implemented in phases from January 2023, will be fully implemented by 2025, while it will be implemented for the classes XI and XII from 2025 to 2026.
The students of JSC and JDC faced a serious teaching and learning gap due to the Covid restrictions. The government could not hold the JSC and JDC exams for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Since the exams were not held, students got certificates based on the evaluations by their educational institutions.
The concerned stakeholders at that time said that the pandemic had caused irreparable loss for the students.
Amid such a situation, the government started the implementation of the new curriculum for these students. As the new curriculum does not contain any provision for holding such exams, the government decided to cancel it.
The government introduced JSC examination in the national curriculum in 2009 for general students and the following year it was included for Madrasa level students in the name Junior Dakhil Certificate.
Such abrupt decision earned hug criticism from different quarters including the academia, but the government brushed aside their concerns on different grounds.
