Out of 550 houses in Baridhara, 342 have sewage connections to surface drains

Amid ongoing campaign to block sewage connections that lead to surface drains, Dhaka North City Corporation’s (DNCC) yesterday identified that out of 550 houses in Baridhara, 342 have sewage connections to surface drains.
After conducting the drive on 11 January when on Baridhara Road No.11 DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said with disappointment, ” This is the condition of one of the most aristocratic areas of Dhaka, what can be the condition of the other parts of Dhaka?”
”The sewage lines of the houses are constantly polluting the canal after connected with surface drains. Subsequently, instead of fish farming in the canal, mosquitoes are being farmed there. ”
Addressing the ongoing campaign against faulty sewage connections the DNCC Mayor said that the campaign was started from the first Septembe, 2022. Sewage connections connected with surface drains, canals or lakes must be stopped to ensure safety.
The list has already been prepared. The DNCC must disconnect all the illegal sewage lines prosecute the guilty, he added.
He even announced to reward building owners for proper waste management
Regarding the issue of faulty sewage connections at Baridhara, the President of Baridhara Housing Society, Firoj Hasan said, ”It is really regretful. We will solve the issue shortly by consulting with the house owners.”
Meanwhile, in a survey conducted by DNCC and experts from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), it was found that 85% of the houses in elite areas of the capital like Gulshan, Baridhara have sewage lines that lead directly to surface drains and lakes.
