Rangpur Riders registered an easy 34-run win over Comilla Victorians in their first match of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Cricket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Friday.
Sent into bat first, Rangpur piled up a satisfactory 176 for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 20 overs and then all out Comilla for 142 off 19.1 overs.
Rangpur Riders made a formidable start as two openers Mohammad Naim and Rony Talukdar put on together 84 runs in the opening stand before Rony was stumped out by wicketkeeper Jaker Ali off Khushdil Shah when Rangpur’s total was 84.
Rony hammered a hurricane 67. His 31-ball innings was studded with 11 fours and a sixer.
After Rony’s departure, Naim and one-down Shoaib Malik built another worthy partnership scoring together 31 runs before Naim was caught by Mosaddek Hossain off Fazalhaq Farooqi when Rangpur’s score was 115 for the loss of two wickets.
Naim made 29 from 34 balls including four fours.
Second-down Sikandar Raza (12) was caught by Ashiqur Zaman off Mosaddek Hossain when Rangpur’s total was 134 for the loss of three wickets.
After Raza’s dismissal, Shoaib and Nurul Hasan scoring together 29 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Shoaib was run out by a joint-effort of Ashiqur Zaman and Jaker Ali when Rangpur’s score was 163 for the loss of four wickets.
Shoaib hit a polished 33 from 26 deliveries featuring one four and one six.
Nurul Hasan remained unbeaten with 19 runs. He struck one six and one four in his 11-ball knock.
Mosaddek Hossain, Khushdil Shah, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mustafizur Rahman took one wicket each conceding 13, 25, 28 and 31 runs respectively.
Comilla Victorians faced an debacle as they lost three wickets for 57 runs.
Second-down Imrul Kayes and Mosaddek Hossain repaired the damage adding together 58 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Imrul Kayes was caught by Benny Howell off Azmatullah Omarzai when Comilla’s score was 115 for the loss of four wickets.
Kayes played a captain’s knock of 35. His 23-ball innings saw four fours and a sixer.
After Imrul’s departure, Comilla batters failed to resist fine bowling attack of Rangpur Riders.
Hasan Mahmud grabbed three wickets instead of 20 runs, while Sikandar Raza and Robiul Haque bagged two wickets each for 23 and 33 runs respectively.
