DU student Bipu murder, 5 imprisoned with fine

A Dhaka court yesterday convicted and sentenced five people to life imprisonment and fined them Taka 10, 000 each in a case lodged in connection with the murder of Dhaka University (DU) student Monirul Islam Bipu.
The five convicts are- Babu, Babul alias China Babul, Torikul Islam alias Millat, Khairul Bashar and Sumon alias Patla Sumon.
Judge Iqbal Hossain of the Special Sessions Judge Court-5 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict this noon. Besides, the court acquitted five others from the case.
According to the case documents, Bipu, then a BBA student of Dhaka University, went out of his Demra home with his neighbour Babu on July 26 in 2004. Later, Bipu was found severely injured. Bipu’s aunt and a neighbour rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Bipu’s mother Laila Begum filed the case with Demra Police Station.
Police on November 29, 2004, submitted the charge sheet of the case against 10 in the case. The court on different hearing dates examined eight of total 30 witnesses of the case and came up with the verdict on Thursday.
