Police issue guidelines for locals ahead of Metro rail launch

Police have issued seven guidelines for the residents and businesses along the Agargaon-Uttara route of metro rail as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the mega project on December 28 and ride the train as the first passenger.
Parvez Islam, officer-in-charge of Pallabi police station, told Bangla Tribune that several conditions have been given to residents, offices and residential hotels to ensure Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s security during the inauguration.
“Measures have been taken in advance to avoid any untoward incident during and before the inauguration,” he said.
“We expect the citizen of the city to observe the inauguration of the metro rail with festive enthusiasm and maintain the law and order around the area,” Parvez added.
As per the notice no new tenant will be allowed to move in any building or flat near the metro rail site before December 29 and no new offices, shops, or restaurants will be opened in the nearby commercial spaces on December 28.
People are instructed not to dry clothes or stand on balcony next to the metro rail route on the day of the inauguration.
The notice also instructed that no pictures or festoons can be put up on buildings or flats in those areas on that day.
No one will be allowed to stay in the commercial space of any building adjacent to the Metro rail or in the residential hotel on December 28, it said.
The owner of any licensed weapon will have to submit their arms to the nearby police station within December 25 as per the notice.
The notice also said that during the inauguration program, all banks and
ATM booths on both sides of metro rail will have to remain closed from morning till the end of the ceremony.
The government has been tightening security across Bangladesh since the beginning of December.
Police in special drives arrested 23,968 people including 72 militants and listed criminals across the country.
Police conducted 33,429 special drives from December 1 to December 15, said an official wishing anonymity at police headquarters.
