India made 278 for the loss of six wickets against Bangladesh on the first day of the first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.
After winning the toss, India decided to bat first and KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, the two openers of the touring side made a good start as they put on together 41 runs in the opening stand before Shubman Gill (20) was caught at the slip by Yasir Ali off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam when India’s total was 41.
After Gill’s dismissal, KL Rahul could stay at the crease for a short period as he (22) was bowled out by pacer Khaled Ahmed when the visitors’ score was 45 for the loss of two wickets.
Second-down Virat Kohli (1) was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam when India’s total was 48 for the loss of three wickets.
Then, first-down Cheteshwar Pujara and third-down Rishabh Pant built a worthy partnership. They scored together 64 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Pant was bowled out by right-arm spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz when the tourists’ score was 112 for the loss of four wickets.
Pant hit a polished 46. His 45-ball innings was laced with six fours and two sixes.
After Pant’s departure, Pujara and Shreyas Iyer salvaged their team from danger adding together 149 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Pujara was bowled out by Taijul Islam when India’s total was 261 for the loss of five wickets.
Pujara was a victim of nervous nineties. He notched up a painstaking 90. He hit 11 fours in his 203-ball innings.
Later, fifth-down Axar Patel (14) was trapped leg before wicket by Mehidy Hasan Miraz when India’s first day play came to an end.
Iyer remained unbeaten with 82. His 169-ball knock saw 10 fours.
Taijul Islam was the day’s most successful bowler of the red-and-green outfit. He grabbed three wickets in the space of 84 runs.
Miraz bagged two wickets at the cost of 71 runs, while Khaled Ahmed took one wicket instead of 26 runs.
