DU students stage demo for ‘safe campus
DU Correspondent :
Several hundred students of Dhaka University (DU) staged demonstration and marched through the campus to press their 11 point demands including ‘safe campus’.
The students also created barricade in the TSC areas and checked university’s ID cards in order to stop the outsiders from entrance.
They issued an ultimatum to the university administration to meet the demands by December 10 or they will go for tougher programmes.
The students rose in protest for safe campus after the death of a woman, who was dragged by a private car on the campus around a kilometre on Friday.
However, a large number of vehicles are being driven through the campus as having not any restriction for outsiders.
Students said that they feel unsafe on the campus as heavy vehicles run through the area and for environment disruption for the sound of these vehicles even is heard from in the library.
The 11-point demand includes limited vehicles movement within the campus, setting up of check posts at the entrance gate of the campus, speed limit to keep the roads under the control of DU administration, reduction of sound pollution, to punish killer of Rubina, and installation of CCTV cameras on the campus.
The protesters also demanded to introduce a rickshaw services registered by the university administration on all routes within the university and a specific dress code for the rickshaw pullers.
DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani told The New Nation, “We will introduce some step to insure the safe campus. We want student’s co-operation after stopping obstruction on the streets.”
The proctor also urged the students not to take law in their own hands.
“Vehicles maintenance is not your duty. Traffic police are there for this.” The proctor said the vehicles movement now has come down a low like previous.
Asking about the real picture that vehicles movement has not come down so far, proctor said, you are not right. Later he said, “Write down what you see”.
