EU’s import from BD witnesses highest growth in Jan-Aug

The import of the European Union (EU) nations from Bangladesh witnessed the highest growth among all the top countries during January to August period, according to statistic of the European statistics organization EUROSTAT.
As per the latest data of the EUROSTAT, the EU imported $15.37 billion worth of clothes from Bangladesh during the mentioned period, whereas the countries imported from the world was worth $67.18 billion.
Bangladesh remained the 2nd largest apparel import source for Europe with 22.89 per cent share of EU’s total apparel import.
The EU’s apparel import from Bangladesh has increased by 45.26 per cent during the first eight months of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021.
China, being the top apparel import source for EU and having 28.06 per cent share, registered 26.59 per cent Y-O-Y growth. EU’s apparel imports from China reached $18.85 billion in the January-August period.
Turkey is the 3rd largest source for EU posted 20.38 per cent growth during the same period. The EU’s import from Turkey grew by 16.97 per cent.
At the same time, the EU imported $3.56 billion worth apparel from India. The EU’s import from India grew by 28.85 per cent compared to the previous year.
Other top countries having high growth were Cambodia 42.21 per cent, Pakistan 31.34 per cent, and Indonesia 35.41 per cent.
BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel said, “Bangladesh’s apparel export to EU countries was always good and we are doing well. We will see slow in apparel export after August due to Covid-19 pandemic situation.”
“But, we are apprehended over the growth due to the higher inflation caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and post-Covid situation,” he added.
