‘Women dominate fisheries sector’

The females dominate in every side of fisheries sector. In universities about 50 percent students are female. But their presence in the field is very low. The problem is women are working in the fish hervesting, some in the processing plant, fish drying, research, extention etc. They have a huge contribute in fisheries industry but they are not treated the same as men.
It was stated by Prof. of Aquaculture Department of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Dr. Mohammad Mahfujul Haque in a online webinar titled “Voices of the Global South – Aquatic Food Systems”. The webinar was held at Wednesday with the participations of BAU and many other Intentional Organization’s members.
He also said, there is no any exact database of women in the Department of Fisheries (DoF). In the other hand We have the Fisheries Policy where there is no any word about women. So the voice should be raised for the welfare of women in fisheries as well as other industries.
The webiner was arranged to raise the voice for the women workers of fisheries sector in the south world. Women comprise a surprising 40% of those involved in the small-scale fishing and aquaculture industry that supports 500 million people’s livelihoods around the world. Their wes discussed about their lives, the industry they work in, challenges they face on a daily basis and solutions that work.
The webiner was hosted by Nitya Rao prof. of Gender and Development, and Director of the Norwich Institute for Sustainable Development (NISD).
Among others, Maffoja Begum, Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh, Ms Lovin Kobusingya, President, Ugandan National Women’s Fish Organisation (UNWFO), Dr Mohammad Mahfujul Haque, Faculty of Fisheries, BAU and Dr John Walakira, National Fisheries Resources Research Institute, NAFRRI Uganda were present as a speaker.
