Tk 1 trillion to be saved if pre-diabetes awareness can be created

Experts said that the country could save more than Tk 1 trillion annually if awareness can be created among people from being infected with diabetes.
“There are about two crore diabetic patients in the country. Extra two crore are suffering from pre-diabetic conditions. The country can save Tk one lakh crore annually if those pre-diabetic patients can be prevented from being infected,” Professor Dr. Sharfuddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) said in a programme on Sunday.
“Most of the delicious foods we are fond of are harmful for our health. If we become aware of our food habit, the diabetic infection can be prevented,” the VC of the BSMMU said in a seminar in one of university’s
auditorium on the occasion of the World Diabetics Day.
The professor said that regular physical exercise is very much important. Controlling lifestyle also plays a vital role in preventing diabetics.
The VC said that a gymnasium will be established in the university as soon as possible for creating opportunities of taking physical exercise regularly.
University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. AKM Mosharraf Hossain presented expertise opinion. Associate Professor of Endocrinology Dr. Shahzada Salim, Associate Professor of Nephrology Department, Syed Fazlul Salim and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Depart-ment, Tariq Reza Ali presented articles at the event.
