The Dhaka University (DU) campus has been flooded by the influx of the graduate students wearing traditional costumes centering the occasion of the 53rd convocation of the university which is going to be held on Saturday at the central playground of the university.
The university administration have already completed all preparations required for the celebration ahead of the ceremony.
Moreover, the students criticized the university administration for giving convocation’s costumes with a plastic bag and speeling mistake of the convocation ties.
“It was a unwillingly mistake. We will be cautious in future in this regards,” DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Md Akhteruzzaman said. The convocation programme will begin with a colourful procession at 11:55 am on Saturday as the campus sported a festive look. The students, wearing their gowns, hoods and mortar boards, will take their seats at the central playground before the president’s arrival.
Nobel laureate French Economist Prof Dr Jean Tirole will be present at the convocation as speaker while President and Chancellor of DU Abdul Hamid will inaugurate the ceremony as a chair.
The campus has already been put on a festive mood on the occasion. Main entrances of the campus have been decorated with colourful makeshift gates that convey warm welcome to the graduates, guests and others.
Marking the end to a journey in university, several thousand graduates were busy with taking photographs wearing special convocation gowns, tie and mortar broads with their friends and some with family or relatives at the historic places and structures on the campus.
The important places including Curzon Hall main entrance, Raju Sculpture were always huge packed yesterday for taking photo of the graduates in a long queue for a single click.
Graduates are directed to enter the main venue of the function at the central playground between 9:30am and 11 am.
A Total of 30,338 graduate and postgraduate students will take part at the convocation. Of them 22,287 students from DU will take part at the central playground venue and 7,796 students from affiliated seven Colleges will participate at Dhaka College and Eden Mahila College campus venues.
Around 97 researchers will be conferred Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 35 will get Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degrees and two will receive Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degrees.
Besides, a number of 131 teachers, researchers and students will receive gold medals from the president for their outstanding performance.
The university will also provide Doctor of Laws degree to Nobel laureate French Economist Prof Dr Jean Tirole as 53rd people.
