Low market prices disappoint bean farmers in Ishwardi

Bean farmers of Ishwardi upazila have been cultivating early varieties of beans for more than 10 years. In the hope of getting a higher price, beans are cultivated in advance at great expense and trouble. But this time he is the sand of hope. Due to the economic crisis, the cost of cultivation has increased, but the yield has been relatively low. Suddenly, the price of beans in the wholesale market has dropped. Beans were selling at Tk 40-45 per kg after a two-day period of Tk 65-70 per kg. Bean farmers of Ishwardi are disappointed as the price has fallen.
On the surface, a few villages in the Muladuli Union can be seen, covering a vast area with only beans and beans. In addition to early beans, winter beans are also grown. Farmers said that bean cultivation starts every year in the first and second week of Asadhar. The yield is available from the beginning of the eighty-ninth month. Due to the severe drought in Ashad-Shravan this year, there has been a widespread failure of bean plants. Many bean plants have died. The surviving plants were weakened. After the rains, these bean plants became stronger, but the yield was delayed. If you plant beans in advance by spending more money in the hope of higher prices, the chances of making a profit this time are very low.
Abed Pramanik, a bean farmer of Rameshwarpur village, said that beans are sold at 30-40 thousand taka per bigha in advance from Ashwin month. This time not even 10 thousand taka was sold.
Kashem Ali, a bean farmer of Atgharia village, said that due to the drought, there is no chance of much profit from early bean cultivation. Besides, the prices of fertilizers, diesel, pesticides and seeds were high. Bean plants have been damaged by drought. Early bean yield is less than other times. Farmers are facing loss due to sudden drop in market prices.
Abdur Razzak, general secretary of Muladuli Artaddar Samiti, said that at this time of Ashwin-Kartik month, up to 2-3 thousand maunds of beans are sold every year. Beans were sold at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg on Saturday morning. But on Wednesday and Thursday beans were sold at the rate of 65 to 70 taka per kg.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Mita Sarkar said that due to the severe drought, the bean plants were slightly stunted, but later due to the rains, the crops improved. Flowering and yielding of the bean plant seems to be very good. Hopefully the yield of beans will increase in the coming days. Regarding the fall in the price of beans, he said, I have also heard about it through the farmers. He said that the prices may decrease due to the global recession.
