Graft case against Gayeshwar revive after a decade

Staff Reporter :
Corruption case filed against BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy gets new life after a decade, as the High Court cleared way for the trial court to continue the proceedings of the case.
The High Court has discharged a rule issued in 2010 over the cancellation of the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charge of amassing wealth beyond known source of income.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayar delivered the verdict on Thursday after hearing on the rule. It also vacated the stay order issued upon the trial proceedings of the case and asked the concerned court to dispose of the case expeditiously.
Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the ACC, while Advocate Nitay Roy Chowdhury appeared for Gayeshwar Chandra Roy. Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state in the case.
Lawyer Khurshid Alam said, “Now there is no legal bar for the trial court concerned to continue the proceedings of the case as the High Court has discharged the rule.”
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on January 5 in 2009 against Gayeshwar. In this case filed with Ramna Police Station in Dhaka, an allegation was brought of acquiring Tk 28.6 million beyond known source of income.
