Himu murder in Ctg HC upholds death sentences of 3, acquits 2

Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Thursday confirmed the death sentence of three convicts and acquitted two others in the sensational case filed for killing A-level student Himadri Majumder Himu in Chattogram in 2012.
The HC upheld the death sentence pronounced by the trial court to Jahidul Islam Shawon, Mahboob Ali Khan Danny and Junaed Ahmed Riad.
Two accused who were acquitted by the HC are Shah Selim Tipu and Shahadat Hossain Saju.
The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman delivered the verdict after holding hearing on the death reference (trial court documents) and the appeals of the convicts and accused challenging the lower court verdict.
A Chittagong court on August 14, 2016 sentenced five persons — Tipu, Saju, Shawon, Danny and Riad — to death in the murder.
On April 27, 2012, Himu, a student of Summerfield School and College in Chattogram, was taken forcibly on the rooftop of a four-storey building in Panchlaish Residential Area, according to the case documents.
Himu was severely beaten there and at one stage, the convicts unleashed three ferocious dogs upon him. Later, he was pushed off the building.
While undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, the victim described how he was tortured. Himu breathed his last at the Square Hospitals in Dhaka on May 23, 2012.
Later a murder case was filed with the Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram. Police submitted the charge sheet on October 30 in 2012 in the case.
