Woman gets life for killing a baby

A court in Kishoreganj on Monday noon has sentenced a woman named Kalpana Begum (50) to life imprisonment for killing her neighbor’s seven-month-old baby in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj.
 In the presence of the woman, the only defendant in the case, Kishoreganj District and Sessions Judge Court. Saidur Rahman Khan has given this verdict. The Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Abu Saeed Imam said that in verdict, the woman was sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Tk 20,000 and another six months in prison. Life convict Kalpana Begum is the wife of Seraj Mia of Shambhupur-Barkanda village of Bhairab upazila of district.
According to the Case Diary (CD) and court sources, on 21 July 2017, Kalpana and her brother Nahid Mia killed the seven-month-old son of Neighbor Shilpi Begum by suffocation after abducting her from the house due to a dispute. Three days later, the police recovered the child’s body from the garbage heap on the south side of the village.
 The next day, when the child’s mother went to the police station to file a case, the police did not take up the murder case. However, Shilpi Begum, the mother of the child who died on August 22, filed a murder case in the Kishoreganj court. Kalpana and her brother Nahid were accused in this.

Police recorded the case on January 14, 2018 on the orders of the court. After the case, the main accused Kalpana was arrested. On February 8 of the same year, Kalpana confessed to the court under section 164. After the investigation, on December 26, 2018, investigating officer (IO) I Habibur Rahman of Bhairab police station filed a charge sheet against Kalpana in the court. Another accused Nahid Mia’s name was dropped from the charge sheet.
