Kamrangirchar residents demand compensation before eviction
Staff Reporter :
Local residents in the Kamrangirchar area in the capital on Saturday demanded compensation before evicting them from their recorded lands in the name of recovering the canal.
They alleged that a dishonest quarter of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) had attempted to forcibly evict the local residents from their recorded properties without compensation.
They have demanded the intervention of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a human chain held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital, presided over by journalist Shamsul Haque Durrani.
Among others, Principal of City College Abdul Hakim, Noor Mohammad, dentist Simi Akhtar, Surjit Kumar Ghosh, Anjana, Nirana Sultana and Babul Mia, were present.
A delegation later submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office to get redress.
They said that the local residents supported the recovery of the Old Buriganga, but a fear had been looming large in their locality when a ‘mark of eviction’ had been drawn on their recorded properties.
They said that such eviction was not acceptable without compensation.
