A woman with her three children tried to commit suicide on the National Press Club premises reportedly after being failed to save ancestral home, and lack of justice.
The incident took place around 11:00am on Saturday (October 29).
The woman has been identified as Shirin Khan, 35, wife of one Junayed Ahamed Khan from Rupganj area in Narayanganj. Their three children’s names are Sazida Khan, 3, Zahir Khan, 10, and Sharmin Khan, 16.
Abdul Momen, Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahbagh Police Station, said that the woman was seen talking with reporters in the area. At one stage, she tried to set herself with children on fire by pouring kerosene.
But, on duty policemen managed to stop her and sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Shirin and her three children swallowed sleeping pills before pouring kerosene on their bodies in front of the National Press Club, SI added.
The woman claimed that she had been living in Barfa area of Sonargaon in Narayanganj for eight years. But, a local Awami League leader forced them to leave her house. She got frustrated after failing to get justice from the authorities in her locality.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital duty doctor Sadiqul Haque told the media that the woman and her two children were given first aid and kept in the medicine ward.
