At least 50 Jubo Dal leaders and workers reportedly came under attack of the ruling party activists during observance of their founding anniversary in Charfassan of Bhola on Thursday.
Whenever BNP and its associate organisations including Jubo Dal leaders and workers are trying to hold peaceful rallies or to observe their founding anniversaries, they are being targeted by the ruling party’s attacks across the country in recent times.
The attacks resulted in the death of a number of BNP leaders and workers with several hundred injured yet, the opposition has been braving all the obstructions without counterattacks and showing the sign of tolerance.
Meanwhile, witnesses said that a discussion meeting was arranged in the residence of former MP Nazim Uddin Alam in Ward No 6 of Charfassan Municipality on Thursday morning, on the occasion of Jubo Dal founding anniversary. When the leaders and workers of Jubo Dal brought out a protest procession after the meeting from the residence, the leaders and workers of Jubo League and Chhatra League led by Jubo League Organising Secretary Manjurul Islam bludgeoned them with sticks.
The incident left at least 50 Jubo Dal workers injured and some of them were admitted to the Upazila Health Complex and Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Jubo Dal alleged that police played a passive role when they were very near to the incident.
Asked about the attack, Manjurul Islam said, “We were in the town but we had an emergency meeting. We placed floral wreaths at the altar of Bangabandhu. I have heard that BNP’s two groups -former MP Alam and Noyon – are locked in infighting. The Juba League has no role here.”
General Secretary of Jubo Dal Shahidul Islam said, “We held the in-house meeting following the permission of the administration. We finish the programme peacefully. But when the leaders and workers from 21 Unions of the Upazila were returning home, the Jubo League and Chhatra League activists attacked us with sticks indiscriminately.”
Officer-in-Charge of Charfassan Police Station Murad Hossain said, “After ending the founding anniversary programme, Jubo Dal was preparing to bring out a protest meeting. At that time, Jubo League attacked them, leaving some five to six people injured. The situation is now under control.”
Among the injured were Upazila Jubo Dal Publication Secretary Milon Nokti, Information and Research Secretary Jahir Uddin, Jubo Leaders Fazle Rabbi, Saikat Maltia, Upazila Matshajibit Dal President Sohel Khan, Joint Secretary of Sramik Dal Hanif, Juba leader of Omarpur Union Bellal, Jakir, Mehedi Farazi, Babul Patwari and Mobarrak Ullah.
Even on 31 July, BNP leaders and workers came under police attack when the former brought out a procession in Bhola, protesting the price hike, loadshedding across the country. In the incident, two BNP workers and some 60 others of Swechchhasebok Dal were injured.
Following the killing incident, local BNP called a strike in the town and condemned it.
On August 26, some 50 BNP men were injured allegedly by ruling Awami League’s associate bodies Chharta League and Jubo League in a rally in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj when they were protesting the price hike of essential commodities.
BNP alleged that the ruling party workers carried out the attack in presence of police, while Chhatra League claimed that BNP men attacked their procession and injured 10 -15 activists
Even on September 1, a BNP youth activist was shot to death and dozens others were injured in a police action in Narayanganj when BNP was celebrating its 44th anniversary programmes across the country.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday some 12 Swechchhasebok Dal activists were injured in a clash with police in Chattogram when they were barred from bringing out a rally.
Police claimed that the attack came from the rally when they urged the BNP workers to leave the streets to avoid traffic jams in the area.
BNP said that they would continue their protest programmes against the ‘misrule’ of the government and demand for the resignation of the government.
Even BNP has been holding divisional grand rallies and also facing obstruction reportedly from the ruling party men.
The ruling party said the rallies of BNP will not bring any result and the caretaker government demand was ‘dead issue’, but BNP is articulating its stance that there would be no election under the partisan government except caretaker government.
