Coastal people in panic of Cyclone Sitrang

Staff Reporter :
People from coastal areas have been panicked hearing that the super cyclone Sitrang might be formed over the Bay of Bengal by Thursday.
The probable cyclonic storm will cross Bangladesh coast, hitting the Sundarbans, said State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman in a recent press briefing in the capital.
It can be similar to Cyclone Amphan, the state minister said.
He said, “Our meteorologists are monitoring and reported that no depression has been formed in the Bay yet.” Meanwhile, the people of different coastal districts are passing their time days and night with fear that the cyclone may hit seriously.
“We are in fear that the cyclone will strike our embankment which was hampered roughly in the last several cyclonic storms like Amphan, Ila and such others,” said Abdur Rahman, from Gabura Union, near Sundarbans of Shamnagar Upazila of Satkhira district.
Abdur Rahman and other residents of the areas said that many embankments of the coastal areas had been damaged seriously due to the previous cyclonic storms but yet to repair.
They said that most of the embankments had been constructed decades before the liberation of the country.
No new embankment has been constructed in the vast areas. As a result most of those very old village protecting guards have become weak and unable to prevent the cyclonic waves.
The people of those areas panicked widely hearing any meteorological forecasts about any probable cyclone as they suffered huge from the previous ones.
Experts said that the direction of the probable cyclonic storm yet to be created.
It is unclear that which part or if any part of the Bangladeshi coastal land to be affected from the cyclonic storm.
But, the people of the area are on fear as to how they will face the cyclonic storm.
“My shrimp enclosures had been affected seriously in the last several cyclonic storms. Now we have heard that another Cyclon is coming within days. I fear loss of my shrimp enclosures again,” said Khaled Hossain, a shrimp farmer of the area.

Meanwhile, district administration has taken preparation to reduce damages from the probable strike of the Sitrang.
“We have directed all UNOs to take necessary preparations. The people will take to cyclone shelters as done in the past,” said Humayun Kabir the Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira.
“We hope the damage will be limited by taking such early precaustioary measures,” he said.
