Onion price suddenly increased in Bagerhat

All on a sudden the price of onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen, increased in Bagerhat local markets in the plea of short supply of imported Indian onion. Onion is now being sold here at Tk.48 to Tk.50 or more per kg according to qualities as against of Tk.33 to Tk. 40 only a few days ago, causing untold sufferings to the consumers in general and the middle class, limited income group and the poor consumers in particular.
Price of garlic which is also regarded as an important ingredient of the kitchen has alos increased. Local produced garlic is selling in the local markets at Tk.90 tk.100 per kg according to qualities as against of Tk.80. But its quality is very poor.
Prices of all kinds of vegetables are still high though some early winter vegetables appeared in the markets. Egg plant is selling here at Tk. 60 per kg. Arum is selling at TK.58 to Tk.60 per kg. Cabbage is selling at Tk.60, cauliflower at Tk 65, okra at Tk.60, poppa at Tk. 40 or more and pumpkin at Tk.60 per kg.
Prices of poultry birds and eggs are still on the increase. Broiler is selling at Tk.270 to Tk. 300 or per kg while the local poultry is selling at Tk.375 to Tk.400 or more per kg. Farm produced egg is selling at Tk.48 per hally of four while locally produced egg is selling at Tk.60 per hally of four. Duck-eg is selling here at Tk.72 per hally of four.
Price of fish became abnormally high just with ban imposed on the catching of hilsa.
Price of rice is also an upward trend. The rice is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.2,000 to Tk.3,400 per mound according to different qualities.
