The Chinese contractor responsible for the recent Uttara girder crash incident, which claimed five lives would not be allowed to do work anymore in Bangladesh.
The Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said it in a press briefing in the conference room of the road transport ministry on Sunday.
The girder fell on a car in Dhaka’s Uttara and killed five people on August 15.
The Bridges Minister said that the Chinese firm ‘China Gezhouba Group Company Limited’ would not be allowed to work in Bangladesh anymore after completion of this project.
He said when the accident took place, 79 per cent work was done.
If a fresh tender was invited, then it would have taken few more years to complete the project, he said.
Earlier a probe committee formed by the ministry for investigating the accident, held the Chinese firm responsible for the accident.
Five people were killed and two others, all from the same family, were injured when a box girder from the project crashed on a car in the Jashim Uddin Avenue area at Uttara on the Dhaka-Mymensingh national highway.
Following the accident, the ministry formed a probe committee on August 15, which submitted a preliminary report on August 16.
The seven-member committee filed its final report on September 1, identifying 12 reasons for the accident, including work on a public holiday without pre-approval.
The probe committee said that during the accident, the crane was being operated by the assistant operator, and the crane did not have a license or digital monitor, and it was kept on an uneven surface.
As per the report of the probe committee, there was no specific traffic management plan or emergency management plan, the traffic management staff and the safety engineer lacked requirements, and the appointment of the people working for the contractor company was not approved.
