Rickshaw pullers vandalise five traffic police boxes in city

Staff Reporter :
The battery-run rickshaw pullers on Friday reportedly vandalised at least five traffic police boxes in the capital following a seizure of two ‘banned’ rickshaws plying in the city streets.
The incident left a traffic police injured, rickshaw pullers, locals and police sources said.
Sources said that a traffic police Mizanur Rahman seized a battery-run rickshaw in front of Adarsha School at Mirpur-10 in the morning. Being enraged, some 25-30 rickshaw pullers charged the traffic police, leaving him injured.
Later the pedestrians rescued the traffic police and took him to the nearby hospital. He suffered a head injury with 13 stitches in his jaw, police sources said.
By this time, the rickshaw pullers slipped through the area with their seized rickshaws.
After the incident, a group of rickshaw pullers simultaneously vandalised the traffic police boxes in Mirpur-10, Mirpur-12, Mirpur-1, Kalshi and Sagufta roundabouts with sticks and brickbats.
Assistant Police Commissioner of Pallabi Zone Ilias Hossain said, “The rickshaw pullers vandalised at least five traffic police boxes when one of their illegal battery-run rickshaws was seized. A case will be lodged in this connection.”
Police sources said that they have been carrying out regular raids on the banned battery-powered rickshaws following the directives of the High Court order.
But a section of people are engaged in this business and the rickshaw pullers prefer accident-prone rickshaws on the main roads defying the ban.
Police said that legal actions would be taken against the vandals for the attack on law enforcers and government property.
