At least 15 students were injured in a attack yesterday by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders on the Dhaka University Campus at a memorial programme held in memory of the BUET student Abrar Fahad who was killed by BCL three years ago.
The incident took place when the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad tried to organize a programme to mark the third death anniversary of BUET student Abrar Fahad around 3.30 pm on Friday at antiterrorism Raju sculpture of DU.
Besides, police have also detained 20 leaders and activists of Odhikar Parishad, said Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-charge Nur Mohammad.
“20 leaders and activists of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad have been detained at the police station based on a complaint that the BCL leaders were attacked. Action will follow inquiry,” Nur Mohammad said.
After the attack, the injured students were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment, but BCL central committee members attacked them again there and drove those who were not injured from the Hospital. Additional seven to eight students got hunt.
Besides, BCL took position in front of the emergency wards of DMCH and some tried to attack the injuried under treatment at the emergency wards. Police however protected them.
Later, they were taken to Shahbagh Police Station, Bacchu Mia, Inspector In-charge of DMCH police outpost told The New Nation.
“About 15-16 people came to the Medical College Hospital for treatment. Later they were taken to Shahbagh Police Station by police jeep,” Bacchu Mia said.

Secretary Shimul Khan, Abdur Rahim, Juhurul Haque Hall Chhatra League President Kamal Uddin Rana, General Secretary Rubel Hossain along with other leaders and activists of DU unit of BCL took part in the attack.
In the attack, the chairs and microphones of the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad’s program were broken, banners were torned and a total of seven phone sets were allegedly taken away.
Jahid Ahsan, Literary Secretary of DU branch of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad and eight to 10 other were injured and BCL Organizing Secretary Nazim Uddin was injured to during the attack.
BCL Joint General Secretary Mahbub Khan, who was involved with the attack on the BCL program, said “They hold programs with outsiders and radicals on the campus. We come to ask them if they are university students. Meanwhile they attacked us without showing anything and general students of the university resisted them.”
“A number of 12-15 activists of us were injured by BCL attack for the first time. Later when we went to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, BCL again fell upon us. At this moment we were blocked in a room of DMCH.” Bin Yeamin Molla, President of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad said.
“BCL attacked us at hospital and kicked out from there while around five to seven were injured,” Sanaullah, Office Secretary of the organization said.
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad, who was beaten to death at his hall by BCL leaders on October 7, 2019, over his Facebook post criticising the government’s deals with India.
On December 8, 2021, the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 sentenced 20 students of BUET to death for the murder of Abrar Fahad in a hall. The tribunal also sentenced other five accused to life imprisonment.
All the 25 accused were students of the university and leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
