Newly married woman allegedly burnt to death

A newly married woman was burnt alive allegedly by her husband on suspicion of her extra-marital affairs.
The incident took place at Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital on Saturday morning.
Irene Akhter, 22, who suffered 99 per cent burn injuries on her body, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the evening.
Her mother, Taslima Begum, said Irene got
married to Jhintu Miah, a salesman at a local shop on November 14.
Jhintu in the morning poured Kerosene on the body of Irene and locked the door of the room from outside. Hearing her screams and seeing fire and smoke billowing out of the room, locals broke it open on the 4th floor of the 6-storey building. They rushed injured Irene to DMCH and informed her in-laws about the matter.
Police at DMCH camp arrested Jhintu Miah. Matchmaker of the marriage Anwar Bepari said Jhintu earlier married once and has a son from that marriage. He divorced his first wife.
Anwar said after over a week of the marriage Jhintu told him that he would divorce Irene. Anwar advised him to talk to the guardians of the woman.
Arbitration was held in which a settlement was reached. The girl went to her parents’ home in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj. Irene’s younger brother Rajib visited his sister’s house when she told him that she was being tortured.
Jhintu claimed that Irene committed suicide and said that he was not present in the house at the time of fire incident.
