Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque fears that Bangladesh would face dire consequences in its economy if the Ukraine and Russia war continues for a prolonged period.
“The global economy has been affected seriously due to the Ukraine war. If this war continues for indefinite period Bangladesh will also be affected. Even it may exhaust us,” he said.
He made the remarks in a programme organinsed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) at Cumilla District Shilpakala Academy Hall on Sunday.
The Agriculture Minister said, “India, China and the United States have a very big economy. They can survive in any dire situation. But our economy is small. It’s only 40 billion dollars. If the money runs out, it will affect in various arenas.”
“If foreign reserve declines, where will you get medicine? Where will you get necessary raw materials? So the step (increase fuel oil price) has been taken to save the money and the country,” the minister told the reporters.
Regarding the increase of the fertilizer price, the minister said, “We have not increased the price of fertilizer. The DAP price is Tk16 for less use of Urea, DAP contains 18 percent of Urea. Even that will not affect Aman session much. If it rains spontaneously, Aman production will be good, vegetables will not also be affected. The rent of trucks for carrying vegetables will be increased. But I think there will be not much impact on Aman production. We are worried about the production of Boro session.”
