Today is Shaheed Dr Milon Day. On this day in 1990, Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon was killed by the goons of military junta near Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University at the height of anti-autocracy movement. The supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon transformed the anti-autocracy movement into a mass upsurge that prompted the fall of the
autocratic government paving the way for restoration of democratic process in the country.
On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate statements, recalled the supreme sacrifice of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon for the cause of restoration of democratic system.
Different political parties, socio-cultural-professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe Shaheed Dr Milon Day. The programmes of the day include placing of wreaths and offering of special prayers at the grave of Dr Milon on Dhaka Medical College campus and at Milon Smrity Chattar (Square) near TSC.
In observance of the day, Shaheed Dr Milon Sangsad with hold a discussion at the TSC Road Island at 3 pm. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu is scheduled to attend the programme as the chief guest.
The ruling Awami League has drawn up an extensive programme to observe Shaheed Dr Milon Day today.
A statement of Awami League said that like the previous years, the ruling party along with the democracy-loving people of the country will observe the day in a befitting manner.
The programmes include offering of Fateha, special prayers and placing of wreaths at the grave of Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon on Dhaka Medical College campus at 8 am.
Jatiya Samajtantrk Dal (JSD) and Gano Forum will organise discussions at their respective central offices in the city to mark the day.
As a prominent, dedicated and honest organiser of the movement of the professionals, Dr Shamsul Alam Milon was the joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), treasurer of Dhaka Medical College Teachers Association and a lecturer of Bio-chemistry Department of Dhaka College.
