EC to use EVM in next parliamentary polls

Staff Reporter :
The Election Commission (EC) has a plan to use Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in the next parliamentary election.
It said, EVM can be used in 100 parliamentary constituencies in the next Jatiya Sangsad election. If supply is possible in due time, then that can be done in all the 300 constituencies.
Bangladesh had past experience of using EVM though in a limited scale on experimental basis. In the Eleventh parliamentary election, EVM was used in three constituencies only.
Later EC used EVM in few more parliamentary constituencies’ by-elections and local body polls. It is now thinking of using the EVM in a massive scale in the next parliamentary polls making it popular to the voters.
EC Commissioner Md Alamgir said, people have faith in the EVM and oppositions also do it. We are trying to rebuild the faith in the EVM voting system.
He cited Indian experience to say that Indian EVM was less standard rather than ours’. The Election Commission will first bring the technical experts. Later it will be opened for political parties. Everyone’s opinion will be taken.
EC Commissioner Alamgir further said, “We would also urge those who are respected politicians to send their experts. If necessary, changes can be made in the technology of EVM.
