Open-pit mining in north part of Barapukuria suggested

The authorities of Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Limited (BCMCL) are not happy over the report conducted by the Institute of Water Modeling (IWM) on open-pit mining in the north part of this coal field as it found inconsistencies in data analysis, concerned officials said.
The IWM, an enterprise of the Ministry of Water Resources, has conducted a survey on underground water level at Barapukuria to determine whether to go for open-pit mining in the country’s lone operational coal field.
But some inconsistencies were found in the survey, a concerned official said.
“We have received the water modeling report last week and the BCMCL is analyzing data on it,” a senior official of Petrobangla said.
Former Petrobangla chairman Mosharraf Hossain, who was also the convener of the technical Committee, said they have already recommended for conducting an open-pit mining in the north part of Barapukuria Coal Field.
As per the result, the government can move on open-pit mining at Barapukuria, but before that economic analysis is a must by estimating agriculture, households and business establishments’ cost, he said.
