Housewife strangulated to death for dowry

Rima Saha (20), a housewife of village Baruipara within Baruipara Union under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila was strangulated to death by the members of her husband’s family for dowry on Tuesday, it is alleged. The postmortem examination of the dead body was done in the morgue of Bagerhat Sadar Hospital on Wednesday. At that time no member of the husband’s family was present in the hospital. After the incident the members of the husband’s family fled away. But according to them, Rima Saha committed suicide by hanging herself with a beam of the dwelling house. It is disclosed by Ripon Saha, brother of the deceased that his sister Rima Saha (daughter of one Dipok Saha of village Sahapara under Terokhada Upazila in Khulna district was given married with Nimai Saha, son of one Amal Saha of village Baruipara village under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila in 2012. At that time Nimai Saha was given a sum of cash Tk.70 thousand, gold ornaments weighing 70 grams and a motor cycle as dowry. Bu just after the marriage Rima Saha was very often tortured both mentally and physically by the members of her husband’s family for realizing dowry. A few days ago Nimai Saha told Ripon Saha (brother of the deceased) over the mobile phone to change his motor cycle and Ripon Saha promised to change the same very soon. But in spite of that his sister Rima Saha could not save her life from the hands of her husband and the members of his family. She was strangulated to death on Tuesday.
Mayor Jhantu launched road carpeting works in Rangpur
RANGPUR: Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and valiant freedom fighter Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu launched construction works of road carpeting works at different places in the city on Thursday afternoon. He inaugurated the roads carpeting works by cutting ribbon in three separate ceremonies arranged at Mistripara, Purbo Goneshpur and Sahipara areas in the city as the chief guest with a view to developed modern road communication networks. The road carpeting works are being implemented under the ongoing phase-wise construction packages of 142 separate roads, drains, culverts, drainage systems and other works under 142 groups at the cost of Taka 33 crore in RCC area. City Councilors Sekendar Ali of Ward No-23, Nizamul Hassan Badal of Ward No-18, Shahjalal Karim Bakul of Ward No-22 Nurunnabi Fulu of Ward No-25 and female Councilor from reserved Ward Jafrin Islam Ripa attended as the special guests. Executive Engineer Azam Ali of RCC, its Sub-assistant Engineer Rafikul Islam, Joint Secretary of City Shop Owners’ Association Moazzem Hossain, President of District Crockery Association Ali Hossain Mollah and contractor Ashraful Islam were present. After inaugurating the road carpeting works, the RCC Mayor said the infrastructural development works are being implemented for building an eco-friendly, well-planned, modern, traffic- jam free and beautiful city of Rangpur, reports BSS.
3 arrested with phensidyl in Narail
NARAIL : The Detective Branch (DB) of police in a drive arrested three drug peddlers and recovered 147 bottles of phensidyl from Shitarampur Bridge area on the Narail-Jessore highway under Sadar upazila this morning. The arrested were Rony, 30, of Shalgaria village, Alam, 32, and Joinal, 40, of Srikantapur village in Pabna district. On a tip-off, a team of DB police intercepted a microbus in the area and arrested them and recovered the phensidyl after searching the microbus, said Sub Inspector of DB police Siddiqur Rahman. A case was filed with Sadar thana in this connection, reports BSS.
2 OMCH students mugged in Sylhet city

Muggers looted valuables from two students of Osmani Medical College Hospital (OMCH) at Mirer Maidan in the city on Thursday night. Sources said three muggers riding a motorbike intercepted a rickshaw carrying the two medical students-Nusrat and Nuzhat-near Police Lines while they were returning home from the hospital around 8.00pm. Later the muggers snatched away valuables, including cash, mobile phone sets and purses, from their possession.
1 gets life, two 14 yrs’ jail for violating teenager
RAJSHAHI : A tribunal here on Thursday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment and two others to 14 years in jail for violating a teenage girl in Matihar upazila. The lifer was identified as Jasim, 34, hailing from Tangon Purba Para area in Charghat upazila, while the two who got 14 years’ RI were identified as Biplob, 29, son of Talsem Uddin and Monarul, 28, son of Chandu, residents of the same area. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each. According to the prosecution, the convicts along with two or three accomplices forcibly picked up the victim into a microbus from her house on April 4, 2011 and violated her after taking her to a secluded place. Later, the victim’s father filed a case in this connection on April 8. After examining all records, Judge of Rajshahi Women and Children Repression Prevention Tirbunal-1 handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
