Afghanistan won over Scotland by 130 runs in their first Group-2 match of the ICC T20 World Cup at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates on Monday.
Afghanistan piled up a mammoth total of 190 for the loss of four wickets in the stipulated 20 overs after electing to bat first. Later, Scotland were all out for 60 off 10.2 overs.
Afghanistan made a superb start with openers Hazratullah Zazai and Mohammad Shahzad put on together 54 runs in the opening stand before Shahzad (22) was caught at the deep midwicket by Chris Greaves off Safyaan Sharif.
After Shahzad’s dismissal, Zazai and Rahmatullah Gurbaz added together 28 runs in the second wicket stand before Zazai was cleanly bowled out by Mark Watt when Afghanistan’s score was 82 for the loss of two wickets.
Zazai hit a polished 44. His 30-ball innings was decorated with three sixes and three fours.
After Zazai’s departure, Gurbaz and Najibullah Zadran contributed together 87 runs for the third wicket partnership before Gurbaz was caught at the mid-off by Kyle Coetzer off Josh Davey when Afghanistan’s total was 169 for the loss of three wickets.
Gurbaz made 46 from 37 deliveries featuring four sixes and one four.
After Gurbaz’s removal, Zadran and Mohammad Nabi put on together 21 runs for the four-wicket stand before Zadran was caught at the deep midwicket by Brad Wheal off Sharif when Afghanistan’s innings came to an end.
Zadran notched up a marvelous 59. His 34-ball innings saw five fours and three sixes.
Sharif bagged two wickets at the cost of 33 runs, while Watt and Davey took one wicket each conceding 23 and 41 runs respectively.
