Opener Tamim Iqbal and one-down Najmul Hossain Shanto salvaged their team from debacle contributing together 144 runs for the second wicket partnership before Tamim Iqbal was caught at the slip by Lahiru Thirimanne off Vishwa Fernando when the Tigers’ score was 152 for the loss of two wickets.
Tamim Iqbal notched up a superb 90. His 101-ball innings was studded with 15 fours. Tamim fulfilled his 29th Test half-century using 53 deliveries with 10 fours.
After Tamim’s dismissal, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque made a worthy partnership. They put on together 150 runs in the unbroken third wicket stand before the first day’s play came to an end.
Najmul Hossain Shanto remained unbeaten with 126. His 288-ball sedate innings was laced with 14 fours and a sixer. Shanto reached his maiden 100-run landmark playing 235 balls with 12 fours and a six. He fulfilled his half-century utilizing 120 balls including seven fours.
Mominul Haque remained unbeaten with 64. He struck six fours in his 150-ball innings. Mominul reached his 14th Test half-century capitalizing 117 balls hitting five shots across the ropes.
Vishwa Fernando was the only bowler of Sri Lanka who got success with the cherry. He bagged two wickets at the cost of 61 runs.
