HC acquits 7 convicts in murder case

The High Court on Sunday acquitted all the seven accused who were given death sentence and life term imprisonment by a trial court in a murder case of Pirojpur district.
The High Court bench of Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice A S M Abdul Mobin delivered the verdict after holding hearing on the death references and appeal petitions of the case.
The trail court concerned gave death sentence to four accused and life term imprisonment to three accused.
Advocate Fazlul Haque Khan Farid and Sheik Ali Ahmed Khokan appeared for the accused, while Deputy Attorney General Shaheen Ahmed Khan represented the state. Advocate Fazlul Haque later said, “The accused have been acquitted in the High Court verdict as the testimony of the witnesses in the case is inconsistent and not credible.”
The lawyer said that when the murder took place in 1998 two accused of the case, Dulal Sikder and Badal Sikder, were in jail in another case.
But the witnesses said that these two accused stabbed the victim which means there was something inconsistent in the testimony of the witnesses, added the lawyer.
Following a land dispute, Badal Sarder, son of Jalal Sarder of Bhandaria upazila under Pirojpur district, was murdered on September 1 in 1998.
Later Badal Sarder filed a case in this murder incident. Later the case was transferred to a Jhalokati court. The court declared the verdict on July 1 in 2015 in the case.
In the trial court verdict the court handed down death sentence to Shahid Sikder, Dulal Sikder, Badal Sikder, and Nizam Sikder. It also gave life term imprisonment to Salam Sarder, Harun Sikder and Minu Sikder after the trial.
Later the death references were sent to the High Court for approval. Besides, some appeal petitions were also filed against the conviction. After hearing the appeal petitions and death references the High Court delivered the verdict on Sunday.
