HC rejects bail plea of Dr Sabrina

The High Court on Tuesday refused to grant bail to JKG Health Care Chairman Dr Sabrina Arif Chowdhury, also a government official, in connection with a case filed over issuing fake Covid-19 test reports.
The HC Bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the order considering that the bail petition was not presented properly before it.
During the hearing of the bail petition, the Bench said that it will not grant bail to Sabrina as the trial court has already recorded statements of 13 witnesses of the case and the trial proceedings of the case are at final stage, Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Monirul Islam, concerned state lawyer, told the reporters.
Dr Sabrina has recently filed the bail petition with the HC, citing ground that she has been in jail for a long period and there is no specific allegation against her.
Earlier on September 15, a Dhaka court denied bail to Sabrina in connection with the same case and later on November 3 this year another High Court Bench denied bail to her on the same grounds.
Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub appeared in the court on behalf of Dr Sabrina, while Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Monirul Islam represented the State.
Police arrested Dr Sabrina on July 12 this year about three weeks after the scam came to light. Police called Dr Sabrina at Tejgaon Police Deputy Commissioner’s office around 1:00 pm for interrogation. After questioning for three hours, police showed her arrested in the case.
Dr Sabrina was working as a registrar doctor in the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. Although she was working in a government organization, she gave several interviews to media as the chairman of JKG Health Care, according to police.
The Health Ministry suspended Sabrina from the post of registrar doctor at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases for violating rules.
On June 24, police had arrested her husband Ariful Haque Chowdhury and four others for their alleged involvement in issuing fake Covid test reports.
Several cases have already been filed against JKG Health Care on various charges including fraudulence. Sabrina was shown arrested in a case filed with Tejgaon Police Station in June.
