Corruption and political cronyism make RAJUK into lumbering elephant

NAZRUL Islam, General Secretary of the Rajuk Uttara Apartment Project Flat Owners’ Welfare Association claimed in a report published by a local daily that the flats built by RAJUK in Uttara were substandard and uninhabitable. Apparently RAJUK gave the construction works to firms owned by an MP and a State Minister.
The flats have myriad problems. The usable area is more than a quarter less than advertised, the basic utilities like water and gas, are not connected in most flats, the lifts don’t work, most fittings are coming apart and are not usable. Perhaps worst of all is that the buildings don’t have any security walls to prevent outsiders from getting in.
As usual RAJUK and the various other firms like the utility companies are busy trading blame at each other, when they are not busy citing numerous ‘complications’ for the fact that the work is not finished. Considering that RAJUK’s track record in the past has been proven to be abysmal then why is it that the government does not considering out sourcing the work to a private firm?
Private construction firms have proven themselves quite capable of finishing high quality construction projects — from high rise towers to gated land projects. It is not difficult to imagine that a private project could have finished the work in half the time and managed to produce a better quality of work than the nonsense that RAJUK has managed to produce.
The task of formulating and implementing big projects should be taken away from RAJUK — it should only be given the task of getting the ideas for such projects — the implementation should be left to others to ensure that they are fulfilled adequately. Corruption and political cronyism have made RAJUK into a lumbering elephant — quite incapable of doing even basic things in an adequate manner.
