Prices of vegetables come down but rice, edible oil still high

The prices of the rice, edible oil and pulse are still high in the city’s kitchen markets, although the prices of winter vegetables and onion are coming down due to adequate supply in the markets.
Consumers said prices of some essential commodities, including vegetables, have come down a bit, but not yet comfortably. The prices of will come down further when new rice and potatoes and onions arrive in the markets and the supply of winter vegetables begins in full swing, they added.
Visiting different city’s kitchen markets this correspondent found that after a long time, the price of vegetables has started falling slightly in the markets as most of the winter vegetables were selling between Tk 40 and Tk 50 in the city’s kitchen markets.
Cauliflower was selling at Tk 30-40 per Kg, bean at Tk 50-60, which was more than Tk 100 per kg, green chilli at Tk 120 in the Karwan Bazar on Friday.
Traders said onion prices declined further in the city markets thanks due to optimum import as well as local supply of the spice.
Big traders in Dhaka, Faridpur, Rajbari, Pabna and Natore are also releasing a large quantity of onion, as new early variety – ‘Murikata’ – will hit markets within a few days, which has helped easing down its prices, they said.
Imported Burmese and local onion were sold at Tk 58-80 a kg based on quality, while other imported ones were selling at Tk 35-45 a kg, showing Tk 10-20 decline a kg in a week.
Narayan Chandra Saha, proprietor of Nabin Traders at Shyambazar, said that prices started declining in Dhaka, Faridpur and Pabna regions, as new onion will hit markets within a few days.
He also said seasonal stockists are releasing onion in a large scale to avoid wastage and to hold market of new onion.
“Onion with leaves is now available in the market, while ‘Murikata’ will be available within a few days. We are selling local onion at Tk 62-65 a kg, while imported Burmese one at Tk 38-44 a kg,” he said.
The reduction of the prices of the vegetable was not relief the consumers as the prices of the rice, edible oil and meat are still high.
The price of fine rice has gone up again. Fine miniket rice was selling at Tk 60 per kg, Nazirshail at Tk 60-62 per kg and the medium quality rice at Tk 52-53 per kg. On the other hand, the price of good quality coarse rice is stable at Tk 48 -50 per kg.
Abu Raihan, a rice trader at Karwan Bazar, said that the price of fine rice was increased by one to two taka per kg than previous week.
The prices of loose edible oil have increased further. Soybean oil was selling at Tk 105 per kg while palm super at Tk 96 per kg.
The supply of local fish in the market has increased. Prices are also stable. The price of farm’s chicken brown eggs has come down as selling at Tk 95-100 per dozen, which was less than Tk 5 than the previous week.
Prices of most other essentials, including rice, edible oil, sugar, fish, potato, vegetables and pulses, remained static at their previous high.
