Court sends Shahabuddin Hospital MD, 2 others on 5-day remand

A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted 5-day remand for interrogating Managing Director of Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital Faisal Al Islam, Assistant Director Dr Abul Hasnat and storekeeper Shahrij Kabir in a case filed on charges of fraud and irregularities in the name of treatment.
Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Asheq Imam passed the order after hearing on a petition placed by police seeking remand for them.
Earlier on the day, police official of the Gulshan Police Station produced them in the court and prayed for 7-day remand for each of them.
On the other hand, the concerned lawyers submitted bail petitions for the accused and opposed the remand prayer. After hearing the both sides, the court rejected the bail petitions and granted 5-day remand for each of them.
Advocate Shahinur Islam Shahin took part in the hearing on behalf of the accused, while Assistant Public Prosecutor Advocate Hemayet Uddin Khan Hiron represented the State. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials arrested the Managing Director of Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital Faisal Al Islam from a local residential hotel in city’s Gulshan area on Monday night and two others on Sunday while conducting a drive in the hospital.
Later they were handed over to the Gulshan Police Station and a case was filed on charges of fraud and irregularities in the name of treatment.
On Sunday afternoon, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam raided the hospital in the capital’s Gulshan area and found the anomalies.
The hospital authorities have been deceiving patients in the name of detecting Covid-19 by rapid test kits which are not approved by the government yet.
RAB officials said the Shahabuddin Hospital authorities started Covid-19 tests with the unauthorized kits since April and also provided Covid-19 reports without testing samples. They were tested negative at the hospital, issuing fake reports claiming they were Covid-19 positive.
RAB also found date-expired medical and surgery equipment in the operation theatre and unauthorized medicine during the drive.
