Dr Matin Rahman is a living legend in the country’s film arena. He is a respected person to film actors and directors. For last 12 years he did not make any movie. But he has interested to make it again. While talking in this regard Matin Rahman said, “I will gather knowledge after observing present environment, condition and process. If that knowledge inspires me then I will make film again, otherwise not. If I do not relate with the situation I will not process. Now time will say what will be happened?”
Now Matin Rahman is working as Associate Professor at Department of Film & Media Studies at Stamford University. He has PhD on film. He is the only PhD degree holder among the film directors in Bangladesh.
Abdul Jabbar and Jarina Begum’s son Matin Rahman was born at Shahpur village of Boalia union in Naogaon on March 18 in 1952. He is the eldest among seven brothers and two sisters. For this reason, his parents had more expectation about him. He said that his family was religious-minded. While going to school Matin saw Taj cinema hall every day. When he went to his maternal uncle house he watched movies. From that time fascination about movie grew up in his mind. After coming Dhaka he started study on Film at late Alamgir Kabir’s film institute, Dhaka Film Institute (he was one of 12 first 12 students of that institute) and worked as assistant of Azizur Rahman at the field level. His life got turning point there. As full director, he first made film Lal Kajol casting Shabana which released in 1982. From his first film he came into discussion and started to make history. Later, he made films Chitkar, Radha Krishno, Swargo Norok, Jibon Dhara, Ranga Bhabi, Birongona Sokhina, Andho Biswas, Tomake Chai, E Mon Chai Je, Mon Manena, Biyer Fool, Matir Fool, Narir Mon, Mohobbot Jindabad, Rakkhushi, Wrong Number and Tomakei Khunjchhe. In 1992, his directed film Andho Biswas got six National Film Awards.
While asking him to return those days Matin Rahman replied, “In fact, this glory changes in different eras in different ways. My child finds entertainment on laptop while my wife gets it from TV channels. In real life, late Chashi Nazrul Islam and late Mohammad Hannan were so close to me. Our life is too short. I have no anger with anybody. I always feel proud of my two daughters – Nawsheen and Nawrin and only son Mrittik Rahman.”
