Six die in Dhamrai after tree falls on rickshaw-van

Six people died and two others injured when a tree under the jurisdiction of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) fell on the rickshaw-van in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of the capital on Monday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Ayesha, 60, Majeda Begum, 65, Nuru, 65, his wife 65, Shamsul Haque, 70 and Shefali Begum, 65.
The injured Tamim and the auto-rickshaw driver Hazrat Ali rushed to the Dhamrai Hospital, police said.
Dipak Chandra Saha, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamrai Police Station, said, “A tree fell on a rickshaw-van — carrying seven people on Kaulipara-Mirzapur Road at Madartek when the roadside trees were being cut there around 1:45pm.”
Four of its passengers died on the spot and two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, the OC said.
The employees of the contractor tasked with the removal of the tree have managed to escape after the incident, he said.
The bodies were sent to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsies, the OC added.
