Uniform admission test at public univs from 2021
Staff Reporter :
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has agreed to introduce a uniform entrance test for admission to all public universities in the country from the next academic session for 2020-2021.
Students who passed their HSC or equivalent examinations will be eligible for the admission test, based on the high school curriculum for humanities, business studies and sciences.
The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting between the vice- chancellors of public universities and University Grants Commission at the latter’s office in the capital on Thursday.
Vice-Chancellors of public universities were present at the meeting chaired by the UGC Chairman Professor Kazi Shahidullah, said in a statement of the UGC.
The governing bodies of universities “will discuss with the VCs of some selected universities, including the four operated under the 1973 ordinance to outline the detailed test method,” the statement said quoting Professor Shahidullah.
The UGC’s move came after repeated calls from the country’s leaders including President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over the last few years to go for a unified entrance test for universities.
“The Vice-chancellors agreed for a combined admission test for all public universities from 2020-21 session,” said Professor Muhammad Alamgir, a member of the UGC.
However, he said: “The process of the test and legislative issues will need another meeting, which will be held soon.”
“Legislative issues will not be a barrier if the academic council of the universities agree to hold uniform admission test,” he added.
Uniform procedure will reduce admission hassle for the student and also save time and money.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, “The policy and rules of the process should be developed before execution of the decision.”
“Before setting the policies, it is still not clear from when the new system will begin,” he said.
