Louisiana, Alaskan tribes file UN climate change complaint

Four coastal Louisiana tribes and one in Alaska that say the U.S. government violated their human rights by failing to take action on climate change have submitted a formal complaint to the United Nations in Switzerland.
Sea-level rise and coastal erosion are drowning tribal burial sites in South Louisiana, according to the complaint. Continued land loss further threatens the tribes’ source of food, said Shirell Parfait-Dardar, chief of the Grand Caillou and Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Indians.

UN Chief urges Haitians to resist escalation at quake event

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres used a U.N. ceremony Friday marking the 10th anniversary of the devastating Haiti earthquake to urge Haitians to resolve differences through dialogue and “resist any escalation that could reverse the gains of the past decade.”
The U.N. chief told about 200 staff members and diplomats at U.N. headquarters that “insecurity and slow economic growth are contributing to rising social tensions and a deteriorating humanitarian situation” in Haiti.

US ‘white extremist’ trio arrested for anti-govt plot

Three alleged members of a US white supremacist group have been arrested on charges of plotting to overthrow the American government and conspiracy to murder two anti-fascist activists. Police said the trio were members of The Base, which US prosecutors have described as an international network of white nationalists who discuss “committing acts of violence against minority communities.”

Afghan air force kills 5 militants

At least five militants, including a Taliban shadow district chief, have been killed by airstrikes in two provinces, the command of Afghan special forces said Saturday. In western Nimroz province, a Taliban shadow district chief Akhtar Mohammad, together with one of his associate, was killed.
