75 lakh addicts found
Most youths at risk of drug abuse: Asad
Staff Reporter :
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday said that most of the drug abusers in the country are between 18 and 35 years in age, which means the young generation is at risk of drug abuse.
The most terrifying aspect of drug smuggling and transport is that a large number of women and children are being used for this purpose, he said.
The Minister said this while inaugurating a programme chaired by the Director General of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed marking the DNC’s 30th anniversary at city’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium yesterday.
The Minister also urged for more bilateral and international coordination to uproot the menace as more than 75 lakh drug addicted people found by research organizations.
He also claimed that the smuggling of dangerous drug Yaba could not be stopped as neighbouring country, Myanmar, has failed to live up to its commitment.
“Myanmar promised on several occasions that they will look into the issue and take steps to stop Yaba smuggling, but they have not taken any initiative so far,” he added.
“We are working in three ways — reducing demand, reducing supply and setting up rehabilitation centres — to bring the drug addicts back to the normal life,” he added.
Chairman of MANAS Professor Dr Arup Ratan Chowdhury presented a welcome speech on the occasion where he cited statistics from different surveys conducted by various private organisations and media reports on the extent of drug abuse in the country.
At least 75 lakh people across the country are addicted to drugs in comparison to the 10 lakh back in 1990, Dr Arup Ratan said. If this trend continues, the number of drug abusers will shoot up to nearly one crore, he said.
