SC rejects bail 2 top officials of Destiny

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected two separate bail petitions filed by Destiny Group Managing Director (MD) Rafiqul Amin and Destiny Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd Chairman Mohammad Hossain in two money laundering cases involving Tk 42 billion.
Besides, the apex court directed the trial court concern to expeditiously hear and dispose of the cases against them.
A six-member Bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after hearing the two bail petitions filed by the Destiny officials. Advocate Ajmalul Hossain appeared in the court on behalf of the two Destiny officials, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the two Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan said, “The Appellate Division on November 13, 2016, gave two conditions for their bail. The accused would pay Tk 28 billion to the victims by selling the trees of their tree plantation, said one of the conditions in default they would have to deposit Tk 25 billion in the government treasury.”
 “They appealed to the apex court in 2017 seeking amendment in the conditions, but the court rejected them. Without fulfilling the conditions they again sought bail to the apex court. After hearing, the court on Tuesday rejected their petitions,” added the lawyer.
On July 31, 2012, the ACC filed the cases against 22 officials of Destiny Group, including Rafiqul Amin and Mohammad Hossain, with Kalabagan Police Station. After investigation, the ACC submitted charge sheet in the cases on May 5, 2014.
Earlier, on October 11, 2012, Destiny Group President Lt Gen (retd) M Harun-Ar-Rashid, it’s Managing Director Md Rafiqul Amin, and Chairman of Destiny Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd Mohammad Hossain, were sent to jail after they surrendered. Later Lt Gen (retd) M Harun-Ar-Rashid got bail from High Court but the other two are in jail.
