HC seeks report on patient’s suicide at DMCH

The High Court on Wednesday sought a report on steps taken against those responsible for the suicide of a patient who took his life after failing to get treatment at Dhaka
Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The court asked the health secretary and the DMCH director to come up with the report within two weeks.
The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks as to why it should not be directed to provide compensation for the victim’s family and why the failure and negligence of the authorities concerned to provide him with treatment should not be declared illegal and unlawful.
The rule also wanted to know why the government should not be directed to take action against those responsible and take steps to give proper treatment at all government hospitals.
An HC bench comprising Justice Dr Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the order and the rule following a writ petition filed by Ain O Salish Kendra.
Having failed to endure sufferings, cancer patient Nurunnabi, 40, son of late Ismail Hossain of Laxmipur district, killed himself by jumping off the DMCH eighth floor on Tuesday.
